The Lions Club of San Miguel de Allende
The Lions Club of San Miguel de Allende was chartered as Club #47711 – District B 5 with Lions International USA in September 1987 and will celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2012. Our club is registered in Mexico as Club de Leones Internacional San Miguel Asociacion Civil , a non-profit charitable organization.
Our membership is largely comprised of retirees from the USA and Canada who volunteer TO SERVE the unique needs of our community in San Miguel de Allende. A small town in the geographic centre of Mexico , it nestles at 7,000-foot elevation in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains, with a population of around 80,000 and a further 60,000 in the surrounding rural villages. Our town has official recognition as a Unesco World Heritage site due to its historic and cultural significance.
Primary sources of funding are from membership dues and initiation fees, donations from Trips Through Mexico, members and individuals, and grants from charitable foundations. Expenses are limited and primarily center on our Eyeglass and Diabetes Projects. Membership dues are set to cover our District and Lions International dues plus administrative expenses. The donations from Trips Through Mexico are designed to cover the costs of our Clinic at Calle Correo #63 in San Miguel de Allende. All members and staffers are volunteers and audited financial records are available for inspection and are posted on our website.
