In addition to the Eye Clinic operations, the Club operated a Diabetes Awareness Program during 1994-95.
Planning started in late 2005 to re-create the Diabetes Awareness Program, but to add a Diabetes Testing program into the operations. It was noted that 40 out of 100 native Mexicans are pre-disposed to have diabetes during their lifetime. It is also well known, that with early detection of diabetes, people can lead a healthy and productive life. For this reason, our Club is setting up diabetes testing on each Wednesday. A 10 peso (about $1 USD) donation is requested.
If diabetes is detected, and the client has (Mexican) social security, the client will be directed to the social security Doctors. If the client does not have insurance, the Club will refer them to other doctors.
